How do I implement HIV Instruction in Grades 5-8?

Grades 5 and 6 will have two lessons and activities each using the approved KNOW Curriculum.

Grades 7 and 8 will have three lessons and activities each using the approved KNOW Curriculum.

The KNOW curriculum will be added to the Resources Page on the CVA Website for parents to access. It will be titled KNOW Curriculum. Lessons and materials will in PDF format arranged by grade level and lesson.  Parents will be able to download and/or print the materials for their use.

Homeroom teachers will send out letters to families of all 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students the first week in February announcing the state expectation and how to preview the materials. Previously during the January Monthly Reviews, CVA Homeroom teachers will have conversations with parents surrounding the coming announcement.  March will be the designated month for teaching the materials.

Parents will have access to review the curriculum prior to teaching. Parents who choose will be able to opt out by sending their Homeroom teacher a completed refusal form.

Teachers should place the refusal form in the student’s cumulative file. For students who participate, teachers should note the participation in the students March PE/Health check-in or in the overall March Monthly Review such as, “The student participated in the KNOW HIV/STD prevention curriculum at their grade level this month.”

Districts should retain records of HIV instruction and refusals as they do for their traditional school programs.
