Columbia Virtual Academy (CVA) is committed to maintaining student privacy. We agree to make every reasonable effort to prevent disclosure of personal and educational information we gather about you on our web sites to any unauthorized third parties. We may disclose information to third parties as identified in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
What we gather from you
CVA stores data about students and parents that parents provide at registration, as well as information entered by users authorized by CVA and computer systems that are integrated with CVA systems. CVA may also store information about the type of computer system used to access CVA websites, including information about the web browser or network interconnection services that are disclosed. The personal information we store generally includes names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, usernames, passwords and non-personal information including student performance.
Parties to whom we disclose your information
Certain CVA employees are authorized to access personal information in order to operate, maintain and improve the services provided. CVA makes reasonable efforts to partition data in such a way as to allow CVA employees to only have access to the data needed to perform job functions.
CVA will not sell the personal information of students or parents.
Some personal information may be stored temporarily or persistently in cookies or local storage on systems used to access online CVA systems.
CVA may use and disclose aggregate statistics for the purpose of reporting and promotion.
How we protect your information
CVA uses industry standard mechanisms to protect student and parent information from unintentional disclosure. Examples of such mechanisms currently include restricting system access to authorized users, supporting and often forcing the use of TLS encrypted connections between computers and CVA systems, encryption-at-rest, log masking, session timeouts, response filtering, brute-force password attack mitigations, firewalls, logical network segregation or filtering, high-use alerts, and cryptographic password hashing. These mechanisms may change over time as industry standards evolve. In addition, CVA protects student educational records in compliance with FERPA and similar state laws.
Third party sites
Content in CVA websites may link or embed content from other web sites. CVA makes reasonable efforts to verify these sites also protect your personal information.
Permanent Student Records
All students who attend school have permanent records. The records consist of identifying information, attendance records and documents pertinent to the school situation. All information maintained in student files will be reviewed periodically to assure relevancy and appropriateness. All dissemination, inspection, and review of the student records will be in accordance with the requirements of FERPA.
Military Recruitment and Federal No Child Left Behind Act
FERPA governs how students’ education records are handled. The Federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2002 requires that schools provide military recruiters with student names, addresses and telephone numbers on request. If parents or guardians would rather not have this information released, this preference must be indicated on the Columbia Virtual Academy High School Statement of Understanding and Release each year.
