Is CVA NCAA Approved for prospective collegiate athletics? Yes, it is!
Columbia Virtual Academy is approved by the NCAA for prospective Division I and II athletes to provide proof of graduation and to complete core course work required by the NCAA. Prospective Division I and II student athletes must take courses through approved institutions, like Columbia Virtual Academy, to be eligible for college athletics.
Being a student-athlete at CVA means balancing your academic and athletic responsibilities, and part of that balance involves ensuring you're eligible to compete at the collegiate level. Understanding the NCAA eligibility requirements is crucial to avoid any surprises. Here’s what you need to know to stay on track:
NCAA Academic Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible to play sports at an NCAA college, you must meet specific academic requirements:
- Core Course Requirements: You must complete 16 approved NCAA Core Courses throughout your high school career, all of which can be taken at Columbia Virtual Academy. This includes courses in English, Math, Science, Social Science, and additional approved courses from these areas, or foreign language.
- Core Course GPA: Your GPA is calculated based on these core courses, not your overall GPA. It’s important to track your grades in these courses to ensure you meet the required standards. The minimum GPA varies depending on the NCAA division you wish to compete in.
- SAT or ACT Scores: While the NCAA stopped requiring the SAT or ACT in 2020, some colleges still expect these scores for admissions, and specific scholarships may require them. Make sure to check each college’s and scholarship’s requirements to ensure you meet all the criteria.
