How do I implement HIV Instruction in Grades 5-8?

The KNOW curriculum is available for parents and teachers to access in PDF format arranged by grade level lessons and activities.  Parents will download and/or print the materials. Grades 5 and 6 have two lessons each and grades 7 and 8 have three lessons each.

During January Monthly Reviews, CVA Homeroom teachers will have conversations with parents about this state requirement.  Homeroom teachers will send out emails to families of all 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students the first week in February explaining the state expectation and how to preview the materials. March is the designated month for parents to teach the materials.

Parents will review the curriculum before teaching and have the option to participate or refuse. Parents will refuse this instruction by notifying their homeroom teacher. Homeroom teachers will note parent refusal in SRS Staff Comments. For students who participate, teachers should note the activity in the student's March PE/Health check-in or in the overall March Monthly Review with language such as, “The student participated in the KNOW HIV/STD prevention curriculum at their grade level this month.”
